Installation Of New "Green Roof"

Sellers & Marquis Roofing Co. installs new “Green Roof” on Robert J. Dole Courthouse

After installing a photovoltaic panel over the new roof membrane, members of the Sellers & Marquis Roofing Co. team remove the panel’s release film to expose the pressure-sensitive adhesive.

KANSAS CITY – Sellers & Marquis
recently completed the installation of a replacement roof on the Robert J. Dole Courthouse for the United States General Services Administration (GSA). The new roof uses a mix of two clean-energy technologies – a highly reflective “cool roof” membrane and more than 200 solar panels.

The reflective membrane deflects the sun’s rays, keeping the building cooler in the summer and generating less heat for the surrounding area. The roof is also highly insulated, providing an average R-value of 40, where typical roof construction would have R-values of R-15 to R-20.

A total of 5,400 sq ft of solar strips were placed on the roof that will generate about 5% of the building’s electricity. The 22 kW photovoltaic (PV) array system is made of thin-film solar modules that are lightweight and don’t require the roof to be reinforced, as with the older technology crystalline silicon panels that most people envision when they think of solar arrays. “This solar roof is one of the first of its kind in the Kansas City area,” noted Mike Pierce, President of Sellers & Marquis Roofing Co. “The PV panels are shipped in rolls, and you just roll them out and stick them down – right to the new roof membrane.”

Funds for the project came from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Because this is a demonstration project, a display in the lobby informs building occupants of the power being generated by the system. The energy information is also available at: www.deckmonitoring.com/dole_courthouse
